Canvas Commons Groups

Commons Groups are a subset of users within Canvas that can be used to jointly manage or limit access to Commons content.  Similar to GROUP courses in Canvas, Commons groups cannot be created by most users and a request must be submitted to CIRT Lab.  Once the group has been created and at least one “manager” has been assigned they become self-managing.

Manager Role Permissions

Members with the Manager role have the following permissions.

  • Set availability of content
  • Add/Remove content for that group
  • Add additional members
  • Add additional managers

How to Request a Commons Group

To request a group in Commons simply call or email CIRT ( or x3927) with the following information:

  • Group Name: What you want the group to be called
  • Members: List of instructors to add to the GROUP

You can expect your request to be fulfilled within 2 to 3 business days.
